February the 4th is National Homemade Soup Day!

Before the era of modern transportation, soup was a product of regionally available foods. For this reason, there are literally thousands of soup recipes available today.

Many soups also have medicinal purposes. What was once considered a wives’ tale, chicken soup now has the backing of the scientific community with helping relieve the symptoms of the common cold. Scientists believe that a bowl of the soup may reduce inflammation of the lungs. It is thought that chicken soup slows down the activity of white blood cells that can cause the inflammation.

Foodies the world over can agree that homemade soup is one known as one of the most comforting foods you can eat. Whether you’ve sat in wet paint, been rained on in your new suede shoes or asked the due date of your manager’s non-existent baby, soup is at hand to help mend your temporarily dreary day!

Soup is our hero and the Pureety Gourmet Flavours Ultimate Soup Kits help you create that homemade favour in just 10 minutes. No peeling, no chopping, just fantastically fragrant fresh soup.

On a cold February day why not try our ‘Classic Minestrone’ Ultimate Soup Kit. Pureety’s kit provides you with everything you’ll need to make this chunky, Italian style veggie soup, including diced vegetable mix (carrots, onion, leek, corn and capsicum), a souper sachet and a sachet of Tubetti Pasta. Eat our ‘Classic Minestrone Soup’ at home, work or anywhere.

Here are some quick and simple directions

  1. Pour 750ml of boiling water into a large pan on a high heat.
  2. Add the vegetables contained in the kit and whisk in the souper sachet until its contents are fully dissolved. Add the sachet of pasta and back to the boil whilst stirring.
  3. Once back to the boil, reduce the heat, place the lid on your pan and simmer for 13 minutes. Remember to stir occasionally.
  4. Take your pan off the heat once your dish is cooked and stir.
  5. For an additional kick, why not try a drizzle of virgin oil and a spoonful of pesto? Serve and enjoy!

DID YOU KNOW? Here are some facts about soup.

  • Chicken and leek soup (or Cock-a-leekie), is one of the oldest types of soup.
  • Some believe that the first-ever soup was made of hippopotamus!
  • Soup isn’t strictly served as a hot dish. Cold soups like gazpacho are a delicacy in areas of the world with warmer climates.
  • Some claim the word ‘soup’ can be traced back to the Latin word ‘suppa’, which means bread eaten in a broth.
  • The Campbell Company first invented a condensed version of soup.
  • For those of you that have been dieting since the beginning of the New Year, soups are thought to be very filling. Line your stomach with soup before a meal and you’ll likely eat less than usual.
  • Skimming a lettuce leaf across the surface of a soup gets any excess fat to stick to the leaf.
  • For grammar enthusiasts, we are thought to eat not drink soup, as we consume it with a spoon rather than sipping it from a bowl. Wait, does that mean we drink mug soups but eat chunky tinned ones?

Happy Homemade Soup Day, everyone! We hope you’ll enjoy this dish as much as we do at Pureety.
